Fortnite Creative 2025 Plans!

Epic updated their development roadmap for 2025 and there's some big ideas on the horizon!

Lead Story

The Road Ahead is Looking Pretty Interesting in 2025!

This week Epic gave their Fortnite Creator Roadmap a freshen up, showing all us creators what they plan to bring to our toolset for the year. The future is looking bright for Creators, here are our favorite updates we think you’ll love the most!

Scene Graph entering Beta stage - Q1 2025

2025 starts off strong with the Beta release of the powerful Scene Graph tool that Epic first showcased almost ten months ago. While creators have been able to test out this experimental feature, islands utilizing Scene Graph have been blocked from publishing to players, that is, until Q1 of the new year!

Once updated to Beta, creators will have free rein to release their Scene Graph powered islands and we can’t wait to see what new possibilities are awaiting us!

We wrote about this new tool back in June, and we felt the heights that islands can reach, were sure to be broken once this goes live.

For a quick refresher on Scene Graph, the tool allows for scriptable , real time modifications to objects in your world through Verse code. Elements will have a higher level of dynamic possibilities that will empower creators to develop complex behaviors previously not possible in UEFN or Creative.

Player Input Device & Gameplay Attributes - Q2 / Q4 2025 (respectively)

So these are actually two different content releases, but we banded them together because they actually help serve the same purpose, exposing more player variables for creators to manipulate at will.

These two devices, working together, will give extra control to tweak players health, max run speed, swim speed or acceleration. Acting as a method of buffing or powering up players at run time.

If you’ve been interested in a perk or superpower system to add complexity to your islands, these two devices will help push those possibilities.

Custom Game Items - Q3 2025

You thought we missed arguably the most powerful update to hit UEFN this coming year?! Not on our watch. There could be a catch though….

We know you’ve all been waiting patiently, with baited breath, to add in your ridiculously huge, planet destroying cannon and larger than life Dead Souls sword to your games. And we’re here for it! Giving creators the power to add custom weapons with editable attributes is a HUGE step towards complex, unique experiences.

The roadmap states Q3 of 2025 as a tentative release date for this feature, however the wording does imply some flexibility on what we can expect.

Particularly the part saying, “Lay the foundations for custom items and inventories”. Lay the foundations doesn’t exactly sound like the full release Creators are hoping for.

On top of this, a recent post following this announcement by a former Epic dev, who was previously involved in this feature, shed some light on the complexity and challenge of implementing this feature.

Our verdict, this update is a pretty big deal, with a lot of complexity which could give Epic a real headache if executed poorly. Even Tim Sweeny spoke to this during a presentation!
We think a realistic expectation for Q3 is an experimental, soft release of this feature, with limited capabilities. Perhaps just the power to import custom cosmetic items or edit the attributes of existing weapons? While we don’t know exactly what Epic has in store for this, we want to manage our expectations, as we may not have the full fledge possibilities we’re dreaming of with year.

Distance Based Barriers - AsicsoN

This weeks learning resource of the week comes from the talented AsicsoN! The tutorial shows an easy to follow, advanced barrier shader which has an animated dissolve effect based on player position.

It highlights a load of powerful material nodes and some pretty advanced math concepts to deliver a high quality effect. These types of effects are only possible through UEFN and a big reason why 69% of creators favored UEFN over Creative.

Whether you’re in the market for a cool barrier effect, or just looking to push your material shader knowledge, there’s plenty to learn here!
